Irish National Champion John Rooney Named Assistant Squash Coach

New Coach has Won Last Two Titles in Home Country

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – John Rooney, who has won the past two National Championships in Ireland, has been named assistant coach for the Yale Squash program. Rooney joins head coach Dave Talbott and assistant coach Pam Saunders in working with the Bulldogs, who are coming off back-to-back Ivy League championships on the men’s side and an undefeated National and Ivy League championship season on the women’s side.

 “John is a highly experienced player and coach who will bring some exciting new elements to the men’s and women’s squash programs,” said Talbott. “John is eager to work with both the men and women in his new coaching position.”

Rooney hails from Galway, Ireland. He has competed for more than 10 years on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world tour and has been ranked as high as No. 52 in the world by the PSA. In 2010, he won the Galway Sportsman of the Year award. He has played for City Of Manchester, Abeydale, Nottingham Squash Club and The Hague.

Rooney is joined by his wife, Terese, who is also from Galway.
