September 10, 2010

Dear Alumni/ae and Friends of Yale Swimming and Diving,

The 2009-2010 year was a great one for Yale Swimming and Diving, culminating in a spectacular retirement event for Frank Keefe.  I would like to thank the Organizing Committee, chaired by Todd Kaplan ’86 Captain and Katie Hazelwood ‘86, for their outstanding leadership in making the event such a resounding success.

It was wonderful to see the more than 500 familiar faces gathered in New Haven to honor our long-time coach and his importance to generations of Yale swimmers and divers.  I have attached the “Frankquet” YSDA photo newsletter for your enjoyment.  All my photos of the event are available on Shutterfly at

The upcoming 2010-2011 season will be an exciting year as well.  We welcome our two new Robert J.H. Kiphuth Heads of Swimming, Tim Wise and Christina Teuscher.  Ryan Moehnke returns as Diving Coach and we welcome new assistant coaches, Toni Pullman, a former swimmer at Brown and accomplished club coach, and Kevin Norman, a UNC-Wilmington graduate and former volunteer assistant coach at Yale.

Over the past few months I have been working closely with the Athletic Department and Kristin Krebs-Dick ’93 Captain to craft a new path for the YSDA.  The timing is right to establish a new leadership structure to address the numerous initiatives of our Association as our new coaches take the reins and look to our support.

Accordingly, we plan to replace the current decentralized Association structure with a formal Board of Directors model.  The use of e-mail, web sites, and social networking tools have spawned greater involvement and now is the time to establish a formal structure to tap the energies and initiative of our members.

The Board will consist of a number of officers, including the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary, along with the heads of a number of key committees.  The officers will meet on a regular basis to coordinate the work of the Association and will reach out to Association members to staff the key initiatives.  As part of this new leadership model, we will institute formal by-laws and implement a procedure for Board and officer succession.

I will serve as President until June 30, 2011, when I will pass the Association presidency on to Kristin Krebs-Dick.  Kristin, a member of both the New Coach Selection Committee and the Organizing Committee for the Keefe retirement event, has been actively involved with the Association and has worked tirelessly to help develop this transition.  For the current year, Kristin will assume the role of Vice President on the Board of Directors.  Please join me in welcoming Kristin in her new role.

We will be sending out more information about the Board and Committee structure, the Board meeting calendar, attracting volunteer talent, and the by-laws and officer succession policies over the next few months.  By way of this letter, we are actively soliciting YSDA members who would like to serve on the Board.  Please contact Kristin ( and/or me ( if you are interested in serving.

At this time of transition in coaching leadership, there has been an especially high level of interest and enthusiasm.  I believe that this new Board structure will capitalize on this energy to move Yale Swimming and Diving forward.

I would like to thank all of you for your support through the years.  I hope you will embrace these changes and work to further our mission to provide for each new generation of swimmers and divers the same opportunities which we enjoyed at Yale.

Warm regards,

John Lapides ‘72
