No. 2 Bulldogs Take Second at Tom Noble Team Race
Team Dodges Northeast Snowstorm to Race in Sunny Conditions
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Bulldogs traveled out of district this weekend to race at the Tom Noble Team Race, finishing second. The eight-team regatta, sailed on the Chester River near the Chesapeake Bay, featured steady breezes on flat water. Though much of the Northeast fought a blizzard through most of the weekend, the Bulldogs met sunny conditions.
The Tom Noble Team Race was the first time the Elis have travelled to Washington College, a member of MAISA, for an event. The Chester River offered ideal conditions for an early-season regatta, with temperatures in the 40s and 5-10 knots of breeze. Sailing for the Bulldogs were seniors Sarah Lihan and Marla Menninger, juniors Elizabeth Brim and Andrew Kurzrok, sophomore Joseph Morris and freshman Heather May.
Saturday opened with an eight-boat rotation, with each team racing every other team. A strong cross-river current tested the racers' skills by skewing the proper angles to marks around the course. By day's end, the race committee had completed one-and-a-half rotations. The Bulldogs finished the day 7-2, losing only to Boston University.
Sunday began by finishing the rotation of the previous day. The regatta organizers organized the teams into gold and silver fleets around noon, giving each team three more races. Yale faced off against Boston University, U.S. Naval Academy and Washington College. The Bulldogs finished the event with a 13-4 final record.
For Menninger, it was the first event of her final semester.
"It was really nice to get back on the water," she said. "It was great to get the practice in for spring break and the more competitive competitions in the spring."
Morris summarized the event in two words: "good work."
Said Zack Leonard, McNay Family Director of Sailing, "I'm proud of everyone. We learned a lot this weekend and are getting better -- that's what matters."
College sailing shifts into high gear next weekend, with teams fanning out across New England. The Bulldogs will be travelling to the Thames River Team Race at Coast Guard Academy and the Graham Hall Team Race at the U.S. Naval Academy.
