No. 8 Bulldogs Ready for St. Mary’s Team Race
Spring Break Training Prepares Bulldogs for Weekend
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The No. 8 Yale coed sailing team has sun on their faces and quality preparation for this weekend's team race at St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City, Md. They have spent an entire week preparing in sunny Florida and are ready to take on the tough competition in Maryland.
Last year the Bulldogs finished sixth at the St. Mary's Team Race Intersectional. This year's team will be quite different as two of the Bulldogs' top team racers, skippers Sarah Lihan '10 and Thomas Barrows '10, graduated leaving the Bulldogs with big holes to fill. While the team for this weekend is still undetermined due to injuries, the Bulldogs will send three primed skippers and crews after the week of preparation they have had.
The Bulldogs will face tough competition from No. 1 Boston College, No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 St. Mary's, No. 5 Charleston, No. 6 Harvard, No. 9 Navy, No. 10 Hobart William Smith, No. 20 Old Dominion as well as Wisconsin.
The team has been training at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the past week. Six talented alumni were kind enough to fly down for the weekend to provide the team with another three experienced and extremely talented boats to sail against. Once the rest of the team arrived on Sunday night, the Bulldogs had even deeper competition.
The Bulldogs have had an incredible week of sailing with good breeze everyday and beautiful sunshine. They have been having two or three sessions per day and have fully shaken the rust that accumulated over the winter. After an intense four days of team racing, the Bulldogs will focus on a bit of fleet racing before turning back to team racing and flying up to Maryland on Friday.
The Bulldogs will have to transition to temperatures that are predicted to be 30 degrees colder than what they are currently sailing in. The forecast is for light breeze on Saturday with a breeze of 10 to 15 knots on Sunday. Racing will begin at 9:00 a.m.
