PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 1 Yale coed sailing team placed sixth at the New England Dinghy Championship this weekend at Brown. The Bulldogs also placed third at the Oberg Trophy hosted by Boston University, and two separate teams sailing for Yale placed second and seventh at the Short Beach Invitational.

Saturday was a difficult day for the Bulldogs at Brown. An unstable Northwesterly was fighting a Southerly all day, making racing extremely difficult. Six races were completed in each division. The Bulldogs were in 12th at the end of Saturday, and only the top nine finishers advance to Semifinals.

However, the Bulldogs persevered. Nine races were sailed on Sunday in a 6-16 knot Northerly and the Yale was able to climb up to sixth place. This incredibly comeback was due to the strong performances of sophomore skipper Graham Landy with crews, senior Heather May and Eugenia Custo Greig in A division, and junior captain Chris Segerblom with freshman crew Charlotte Belling in B division. With the New England Dinghy Championship completed, the Bulldogs will now concentrate on training for the ICSA National Semifinals that will be held in Norfolk, Va., later this spring.

On the Charles River, a team of Bulldogs raced for the Oberg Trophy. Only four races in A division and two in B division were completed on Saturday, but stronger breeze on Sunday allowed for eight more races in A division and ten more in B division. Senior skipper Emily Billing and junior crew Amanda Salvesen finished sixth in A division while senior skipper Claire Dennis with sophomore crew Sarah Smith finished third in B division. This combined effort earned the Bulldogs a final finish of third.

Sailing at home, two Yale teams competed in the Short Beach Invitational. An all freshman team of Eric Anderson, Marly Isler, Emily Johnson and Megan Valentine finished second overall, only five points away from first. A second team of Bulldogs, comprised of senior Zachary Foreman, junior Max Nickbarg and freshmen crews Henry Lewis and Sanam Rastegar, finished seventh overall.

Next weekend Yale will take a break from qualifying regattas, sailing the Freshman New England Championships at MIT and the Thompson Trophy co-hosted by the Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College.
