ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The No. 2 Yale coed sailing team sits in fifth place at the Gill/ICSA Coed Fleet Racing National Championship co-hosted by Eckerd College and University of South Florida. Five of the total eighteen races scheduled were completed today.

The day started with a strong easterly with considerable chop. Sophomore skipper Graham Landy started in A division with junior crew Eugenia Custo Greig. Junior captain Chris Segerblom started in B division with sophomore crew Katherine Gaumond.

Both divisions got off to a difficult start in their first set. Landy and Custo Greig were over early their first race, having to return to the starting line and clear themselves before continuing their race. Due to a drastic left shift, Segerblom and Gaumond were unable to cross the starting line without hitting the pin boat, so they too had to spin penalty turns before continuing their race. After this difficult first set, the Bulldogs sat in thirteenth.

However, Yale was able to bounce back. The breeze lightened and Landy switched to senior crew Heather May while Segerblom switched to junior crew Marlena Fauer. The Bulldogs had only top-ten finishes for the rest of the day.

A front came through in the afternoon with heavy rain and completely shut off the breeze. Racing was called for the rest of the afternoon.

13 races are left in the regatta and the Bulldogs sit only 24 points out of first.

The first race is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. tomorrow morning. Follow results at http://scores.collegesailing.org/s13/gill-coed/full-scores/.
