NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 1 Yale coed sailing will compete in three regattas this weekend, the Szambecki Team Race at Old Dominion, the Friis Team Race at Harvard and a Southern Series at Salve Regina.
The Szambecki will be one of the most competitive team races of the spring, with top teams from around the country traveling to Norfolk, Va. for a weekend of racing. The Bulldogs will face No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Charleston and No. 6 Dartmouth.
After a week of training and last weekend's second at Navy, McNay Family Director of Sailing Zack Leonard '89 says that the team needs to concentrate on "just sailing, feeling what it's like to put together good streaks and feeling what it's like to get ourselves out of ruts." Specifically, last weekend the Bulldogs had problems with communication, where "we ended up in play four when we should have been going for play two, which means we need to be more disciplined in our balancing."
Sailing at the Szambecki will be skippers senior Chris Segerblom, junior Graham Landy and freshman Ian Barrows with crews senior Eugenia Custo Greig, junior Katherine Gaumond, sophomore Charlotte Belling and freshman Meredith Megarry.
Farther north, Yale will compete in another team race regatta, the Friis Trophy hosted by Harvard. The Friis is traditionally hosted by Tufts, but after this long winter Tuft's Mystic Lake is still frozen solid and therefore unavailable for competition. Seniors Marlena Fauer and Max Nickbarg along with freshman Mitchell Kiss will skipper at the Friis, with crews senior Will Feldman, junior Sarah Smith, sophomore Emily Johnson and freshmen Natalya Doris and Isabelle Rossi de Leon.
Sophomore skippers Eric Anderson and Henry Lewis will fleet race again at the Southern Series hosted by Salve Regina this weekend with freshmen crews Amelia Dobronyi and Chandler Gregoire. These four sailors hope to use the knowledge they gained racing at Salve Regina last weekend to better understand the venue and boats.
Racing will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday. Follow results live at http://scores.collegesailing.org/.
