SAN DIEGO, Calif. - With a 21-4 record, the Yale coed sailing team took home the Walter C. Wood Trophy for winning the Laser Performance Team Race National Championship. This is the fourth year in a row that the Bulldogs have won the trophy and they are the second team ever to have done so.

Sailing for the Bulldogs were skippers juniors Ian Barrows and captain Mitchell Kiss, sophomore Malcolm Lamphere and freshman Nic Baird with crews senior Charlotte Belling and juniors Chandler Gregoire, Meredith Megarry and Clara Robertson.

Head coach Zack Leonard '89, McNay Family Director of Yale Sailing, was excited for the Bulldogs, saying, "we were just trying to do what we know how to do and nothing more and execute our game plan. We did that pretty well."

He continued, "I'm really happy for everyone on the team because they put in so much effort throughout the season and it paid off."

Belling, former captain of the coed team, is the first collegiate sailor to ever have been a part of four national championship-winning teams.

She said, "I couldn't be more proud of our entire team and coaches. It's a little bittersweet for me, but this nationals was a blast and everyone worked so hard to get to the top. Each person on the team contributed in their own way. The past four years we've faced the challenge of transitioning with a new team and it's been amazing to see how everyone adjusts and develops a unique dynamic. I can't wait to see what they'll do next year!"

With the team race championship wrapped up, the Bulldogs will roll into the Coed National Semifinal Championship tomorrow morning. They will be competing in the Eastern flight and the first race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PST on Tuesday.
