Opti I/II
o Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm
New this summer will be a combined beginner and intermediate optimist, a popular and internationally competitive class of boats for smaller sailors. Offered as an alternative to Beginner 420s or for those with previous opti experience, this class will give instruction in safety, rigging, basic sailing, and confidence in all points of sail. Unlike 420’s, YCYC will NOT be supplying these boats. Students will have to bring their own boats, blades, spars, and sails, which they will be able to store at the club.
Optimists are for purchase new or used at almost all good sailing retailors. If you are interested in chartering one for the summer, contact us via email as we have secured a special deal through one of our retailors.
· 420 Beginner
o Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm
Offered to children with no prior sailing experience. It emphasizes safety and teaches basic sailing skills including knowledge of boat, rigging, launching, basic sailing, water safety and confidence in handling all points of sail.
· 420 Intermediate
o Monday-Friday 9am-12pm
Teaches kids who are knowledgeable in basic sailing skills improved boat handling, and provides an introduction to racing. The curriculum is an extension of the Beginner class with an emphasis upon independence in rigging, skippering, and boating safety.
· 420 Advanced
o Monday thru Friday, 1pm - 4pm
Intended for older students interested in sailing non-competitively. The advanced class teaches advanced sailing skills such as high wind sailing, sailing in waves, basic navigation, seamanship, sailing terminology, and safety at sea.
· 420 Racing Team
o Monday thru Friday, 1pm - 4pm
The Racing Team continues the racing instruction begun in the intermediate class and learns advanced tactics and strategy, starting, sail trim, sail shape, boat setup, and advanced boat handling in practices run by our racing coach. The racing team will participate in junior racing clinics and will enter and compete in local regattas against other yacht clubs. Racing team members are also eligible to compete in a YCYC weekly racing series.
· Weekly Racing Series
o Tuesdays, 6pm.
o Competitive races for sailors 15 years old and above. Participants must have racing experience and be prepared to sail in our collegiate 420s. Races will be conducted within the designated sailing area and will be run according to current International Yacht Racing Rules. Race committee will accept protests and results will be posted.
