No. 12 Bulldogs to Compete at Charleston Spring Intersectional

Feb. 19, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No.12 Bulldog coed sailing team will head south to compete at the Charleston Spring Intersectional on Saturday and Sunday. The regatta, which is the first collegiate fleet race of the year for the team, comes on the heels of a win at the Mendelblatt Team Race hosted by South Florida last Saturday and Sunday.

The Charleston Spring Intersectional is the first chance for the team to get in some fleet race experience before beginning practice at the McNay Family Sailing Center. The weather has been too cold for the Bulldogs to begin practicing, but they will face competition that has been practicing at the regatta. The event, which is held in 420s, is hosted by No. 10 College of Charleston. The Charleston Harbor venue can have a variety of conditions, from strong winds and waves to light air and chop with lots of current.

The team has performed strongly at the event in the past. Last year, the team finished eighth overall. In B division, seniors Jane Macky and Adriane Levin and junior Marla Menninger placed second, finishing in the top five in seven of the 10 races. In A division, sophomore John Kempton with crews Levin and Menninger placed 13th. In 2007, the team fared even better, taking second place in the overall standings. The team of junior Thomas Barrows, Abigail Coplin '08, senior Caleb Dorfman and junior Michael Hession was second in A division, missing winning the division by only one point. In B division, Kempton, Hession and Dorfman were third.

The competition at the event should be a good tune-up for the team. Besides the hosts, ranked teams at the event include No. 1 St. Mary's College of Maryland, No. 5 Georgetown, No. 6 Navy, No. 11 Old Dominion, No. 14 Stanford, No. 15 South Florida, No. 16 Boston University and No. 20 UC-Santa Barbara.

The team will get competition underway at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
