Six Bulldogs to Compete in Olympics

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Six athletes from Yale are in China for the 2008 Olympics, with the opening ceremony Aug. 8 and the first competition featuring a Bulldog set for Aug. 9. Here is a look at the Bulldogs competing in the Olympics, and how you can follow their performances.

Thomas Barrows '10
Country: Virgin Islands
Sport: Sailing (Laser)
Notes: First Olympic games for Yale junior; placed eighth in the Laser class at the 2007 Pan Am Games. Has also competed in the past two Laser World Championships and was the 2007 Laser North American champion.

Ashley Brzozowicz '04
Country: Canada
Sport: Rowing (eight with coxswain)
Notes: Part of the Canadian eight that finished fourth at the Linz World Cup in 2007 and fifth at the World Rowing Championships in Eton, England, in 2006; Team earned a berth in the 2008 Olympics at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in June.

Competition dates: Aug. 10 (heats), Aug. 12 (repechages), Aug. 17 (finals)

Sport: Fencing (individual sabre and team sabre)
Notes: Won bronze medal at 2004 Olympics; became first American woman to achieve the world's top ranking in 2003; two-time NCAA sabre champion for Yale.

Competition dates: Aug. 9 (individual sabre) and Aug. 14 (team sabre)
Coverage: The early-round elimination matches in individual sabre competition (Round of 64 through quarterfinals), which start at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 8 and last until 1:45 a.m. Eastern time on Aug. 9, will be available live on-line at nbcolympics.com. Sport: Rowing (alternate)
Notes: Stroked Yale's varsity eight to an NCAA championship in 2007; won a gold medal in the eight at both the 2007 and 2008 FISA World Cup stops in Lucerne. Also captured gold in the four at the 2007 FISA World Championships.

Sport: Sailing (470)
Notes: Three-time All-American first became a member of the U.S. sailing team in 2001; narrowly missed qualifying for 2004 Olympics. Earned spot in 2008 Olympics along with crew Graham Biehl by being top male team at Olympic Trials last fall; currently ranked ninth in the world.

Notes: Had never rowed before coming to Yale; has competed in seven World Championships (winning a pair of silver medals in the men's 4- in 2002 and 2003) and was part of Great Britain's ninth-place finish at the 2004 Olympics.
