Rallis Drives In Megee With Winning Run With Two Outs In Ninth
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — It took three games, but the Yale University baseball team found success for the first time at the 2011 RussMatt Invitational.
Senior first baseman Trey Rallis two-out single in the ninth inning plated senior captain Andy Megee with the winning run to lift Yale to a 3-2 victory over Miami (Ohio) Monday afternoon at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.
Megee went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior reliever Eric Shultz allowed one earned run and struck out two over 2⅔ innings to earn the victory. Senior left-hander Brook Hart started for the Bulldogs (1-2) and struck out five and allowed five hits and one unearned run over 6⅓ innings.
Megee manufactured a run on his own in the seventh to put Yale ahead 2-0. He led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. With one out, he stole third and then scored the run on a throwing error by Miami catcher Adam Weisenburger.
Miami bounced right back in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Weisenburger and Ryan Kaup both singled, then wound up at second and third after an error by Kolmar in right field. An error on Brad Gschwind's grounder to shortstop Matt Schmidt plated Weisenburger with Miami's first run. The RedHawks could have had the tying run score one batter later, but pinch runner Jordan Shusteric was doubled off first base on a Ryan Curl flyout to center.
In the bottom of the eighth, the RedHawks struck again when Miami junior center fielder Ryan Brenner walked and stole second, went to third on a sac bunt and stole home with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.
Rallis drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth, but the RedHawks did not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. Weisenburger walked to lead off the inning, advanced on a sac bunt. On a Makuch single to center field, Weisenburger tried to score from second but was thrown out at home by freshman center fielder Cale Hanson, ending the Miami threat.
The Bulldogs were slated to play Mt. St. Mary's at 7 p.m. Monday and will take on Toledo Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.
