Yale Announces 2013 Baseball Schedule
Games vs. Army at Yankees Spring Complex, vs. Michigan at Citi Field Highlight Challenging Slate
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale University baseball team announced its schedule for the 2013 season on Wednesday, a schedule that includes 20 Ivy League contests, as well as eight dates at historic Yale Field and a return to the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.
The highlight of the non-league portion of the schedule is a meeting with Big Ten power Michigan on March 26, a game that will be played at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., the home of the New York Mets.
Yale will open the 2013 season in Tampa, Fla., with a three-game series against Army on March 9 and March 10. The Bulldogs and Black Knights will meet in a doubleheader on March 9 at Jesuit High School in Tampa, followed by a nine-inning series finale that is scheduled to be played on March 10 at the New York Yankees Spring Training Complex.
The Bulldogs will then travel to Winter Haven, Fla., to take part in the RussMatt Invitational with scheduled games against Bucknell, Valparaiso, North Dakota State, Long Island University and Navy. It is the fourth straight season that the Bulldogs have taken part in the RussMatt Invitational.
Before heading home to New Haven, Yale will visit the University of Virginia to play a pair of nine-inning games on March 19 and March 20 in Charlottesville, Va.
Yale will open its home slate with a doubleheader against Holy Cross on March 24.
The Ivy League schedule begins with a pair of road doubleheaders at Princeton and Cornell on March 30 and 31.
Yale will also play four games against in-state rivals, including a home game against Big East power UConn on April 3 and a visit to Fairfield on April 10. The in-state portion of the schedule also includes a home-and-home series against Sacred Heart, with the Bulldogs hosting the Pioneers on April 2 before visiting the Fairfield, Conn., campus on April 17.
Rolfe Division play begins with a pair of doubleheaders at Harvard on April 13 and 14. Yale will host Dartmouth for a four-game series on April 20 and 21. The 2013 season is scheduled to end with a home-and-home four-game series against Brown at Yale on April 27 and in Providence on April 28.
Five of Yale's 2013 opponents appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season, including Army, Virginia, Sacred Heart, Valparaiso and Ivy League champion Cornell.
"I'm really excited about the challenge of our spring schedule," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "Army is always good, solid fundamentally and well coached. Virginia is one of the elite programs in the country, so that will represent a challenge for us. The chance to play at Citi Field, one of the nicest venues in all the big leagues, was an opportunity that was too good to pass up. All in all, these games, along with others during our visit to the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla., will do a good job of preparing us for our Ivy League season."
The Bulldogs return 16 players from the 2012 squad. Led by senior captain Chris Piwinski, the Bulldogs are looking to bounce back from a 13-31-1 finish last season that included a 5-15 mark in Ivy League play.
