White's Hitting Leads Bulldogs In Loss
DURHAM, N.C. – An eight-run, five-hit second inning by Duke was too much for the Yale baseball team to overcome, losing 13-3 to the Blue Devils at Jack Coombs Field on Tuesday afternoon, as the spring trip rolls on for the Bulldogs.
Coming off a wild weekend of high-scoring games in Davidson, the Elis (1-3) struggled to piece together a consistent offensive rhythm throughout the game, combining for three runs and seven hits off five different Duke pitchers.
Sophomore Harrison White (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led the charge for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk as the designated hitter in the five slot of the lineup. Sophomore Richard Slenker (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) also contributed an RBI groundout in the loss.
Senior Eric Hsieh's (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) single through the left side of the infield in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to four games in the early season. David Toups (Houston, Texas), Nate Adams (St. Louis, Mo.), and Brent Lawson (Newport Beach, Calif.) had the other hits for the Elis.
Sophomore Chasen Ford (Lake Forest, Calif.) came in to relieve starting pitcher Green Campbell (Shreveport, La.) in the second inning and put together a strong outing for the Bulldogs. Ford threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen, scattering three earned runs and eight hits while striking out three.
Duke (12-3), leading 1-0 heading into the second frame, would score eight runs in the second, with all of them being charged to Campbell. The Yale starter threw 1.2 innings, but only allowed three earned runs while striking out three batters.
A throwing error by Slenker in the second inning with one out would allow the Blue Devils to take control. After Campbell fanned Peter Zyla for the second out, he walked Duke's Evan Dougherty to load the bases. The next batter, Cris Perez, would hit a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and adding three unearned to Campbell's stat line.
After two more RBI singles, Ford replaced Campbell and struck out Duke's Michael Smiciklas to end the inning.
The Bulldogs would strike in the sixth inning after Hsieh walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. White would drive in Hsieh with an RBI double to right field, putting the Elis on the scoreboard.
Yale would add two more in the eighth when Slenker had an RBI groundout to first with the bases loaded. White would knock in his second run of the game in the next at-bat, before senior Robert Baldwin (Austin, Texas) grounded into a double-play to end the inning.
Perez led Duke at the dish, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Justin Bellinger was 3-for-4, knocking in two runs and scoring one.
Freshman Mason Kukowski (Katy, Texas) pitched a perfect seventh inning in his third collegiate appearance on the mound. In three innings of work this season, he has not allowed a run.
The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Thursday to play George Mason in Fairfax, Va. at 3 p.m. The probable starter for the Elis will be ace right-hander Chris Lanham.
