In the season opener against Oklahoma State, he scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, both team highs, and against Fairfield he led the Bulldogs in scoring with 13 points.

2001-02: As a sophomore Vitelli was a second team All-Ivy selection. He tied for the Ivy League lead in rebounding (7.2 rpg.), was seventh in three-point field goals made (1.91), 10th in three-point field goal percentage (.396, 61 of 154) and 10th in blocked shots (0.62, 20). His 61 three-pointers were the third most in Yale history. At Brown he grabbed 15 rebounds, the most in a game by a Yale player since Neil Yanke had 15 vs. Cornell on Feb. 11, 2000. He also led the team with seven double-doubles, including a 19-point, 12-rebound effort against Tennessee-Martin.

2000-01: As a freshman, Vitelli was one of the top newcomers in the Ivy League. He finished fourth on the team in scoring (5.7 ppg.) and rebounding (3.4 rpg.) and had five double figure scoring games. In Yale's 66-61 victory over Brown he made 5 of 7 shots from the field, scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds and had three assists in 30 minutes. That performance earned him Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. Against Princeton he led the team in scoring with 13 points. Vitelli started the first game of his collegiate career at Ohio State and had four rebounds in 24 minutes. In the summer of 2001 he was selected to represent the United States in the World Maccabiah Games but did not play.
