Zampier Named To Second Team; Sands An Honorable Mention
Selection
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Alex Zampier, who led the Yale men’s
basketball team in scoring (17.4 ppg.), three-pointers (55), steals
(59) and free throw percentage (.858), has been named second team
All-Ivy. Michael Sands, one of only two players to start all 31
games, earned honorable mention recognition.
Zampier enjoyed an outstanding senior season for the Bulldogs. He
finished third in the Ivy League in scoring and second in free
throw percentage and steals. His 59 steals established a Yale
single-season record, and his 17.4 scoring average was the highest
at Yale since Paul Maley averaged 20.2 points in 1987-88.
Zampier, a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week selection, scored
30 points or more in three games, including a 35-point performance
against Sacred Heart in the season opener. It was the most points
in a game by a Yale player since Butch Graves had 39 against
Harvard in 1983. Zampier finished his career with 1,144 points and
135 three-pointers. In addition, he is Yale’s all-time leader
with 167 steals. Zampier was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection
last year.
Sands, a junior, finished fourth in the Ivy League in rebounding
(6.1 rpg.) and sixth in field goal percentage (.493). In a home
victory over Dartmouth he scored 20 points, and he posted
back-to-back double-doubles at Dartmouth and Harvard.
The Bulldogs (12-19, 6-8 Ivy) finished fourth in the Ivy League.
Yale has finished fourth or better in each of the last 10
years.
