Javier Duren's successes at Yale, both on and off the court, are quite impressive. He scored a career-high 22 points in the Bulldogs' 72-71 heartbreaking loss against Rutgers this past Thursday. Duren, also the co-founder of TeamSober, is the latest Total Mortgage Athlete Spotlight of the Week.
Duren started his career with the Bulldogs in 2011, appearing in 17 games. The following year, Duren led the team with 80 assists, and 37 steals. He was named Ivy League Player of the Week after averaging 12 points and 4.5 rebounds in the Bulldogs' road sweep of Penn and Princeton. He was awarded the team's Most Improved Player Award.
As impressive as Duren is on the court, it is his work in the Yale community that is truly inspiring. Duren is the co-founder of TeamSober, a non-profit, campus-wide movement to minimize the consumption of alcohol by young adults under 21 years of age. In addition to Team Sober, he is the co-founder and pledge captain of Beta Upsilon Chi, Yale's sole Christian fraternity. Beta Upsilon Chi's mission is to foster the spiritual growth and development of each member through the organizing and leading of discussions, gatherings and individual conversations. Duren also works as the finance co-coordinator at Black Church at Yale, where he balances a budget of $6,000 and assists in fundraisers.
Come out to John J. Lee Amphitheater on Tuesday night and watch Duren and the rest of the Bulldogs take on Sacred Heart in their home opener. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
