Heavyweights Head to Princeton to Defend Three Titles

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale’s heavyweight crews will travel to Princeton, N.J. this Sunday to defend their titles in at the annual Princeton 3-Mile Chase regatta. The Princeton Chase, an invitational head-race for men and women’s collegiate crews, will see Yale oarsmen race in the eight and four events. Three varsity eights will race, along with one freshman eight and a few varsity fours.

Last year, after the team’s bus broke down en route to Princeton, it looked like Yale would have to scratch the varsity eight event. But with a little luck, and a lot of speed, Yale’s heavyweight crews arrived at the racecourse in time to lay hold on their boats and begin warming up. Nobody knew what to expect when the varsity eight pulled up to the line in the number two starting position. Thirteen minutes and seventeen seconds later, Yale’s varsity reclaimed the Princeton Chase title and kicked off a day of big wins for the heavyweights including wins in the varsity four and freshman eight.

Yale’s heavyweight oarsmen thus head to Princeton with last year’s titles on the line. With the past weekend’s successes, the Bulldogs hope to hold on to their titles and have all boats improve on their finishes last year. The men’s varsity eight will start at 10:00 a.m., the four at noon and the freshman eight at 1:00 p.m.
