Heavyweights Head to Princeton in Search of Carnegie Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale heavyweight crew team will have its fourth and final dual race of the spring season in Princeton, N.J., this Saturday.  The Bulldogs will take on the Cornell Big Red and the Princeton Tigers as they fight to defend the Carnegie Cup and bring a third trophy home to Gilder Boathouse this season.

Last year Yale took home the trophy with a 1.4 second win in the varsity eight.  In the past three years, each of the three teams racing this weekend has won the trophy (Princeton in 2008, Cornell in 2009 and Yale in 2010).  This season, the Yale varsity eight has a record of 3-1.  The Bulldogs won by open water over Columbia, Dartmouth and Penn, yet lost by a mere 0.4 seconds in their season opener against Brown.  The Yale second and third varsity crews are undefeated.

Princeton, which came within two seconds of reclaiming the Carnegie Cup last year, also defeated Columbia and Penn earlier this month, but each by margins half that of Yale's.  Last weekend the Tigers lost by 1.2 seconds to Harvard after trading the lead back and forth with the Crimson throughout the race for the Compton Cup.  Cornell, which claimed the freshman eight event against Yale last year and narrowly lost in the second varsity event, is coming off a loss to Syracuse last weekend for the Goes Cup.  The Bulldogs are the only ones looking to keep any sort of streak alive, though they will be facing Princeton on its home course.

The schedule for Saturday is as follows:

8:00    Coxswain Meeting/Weigh-In

9:00    3V

9:20    1F

9:40    2V

10:00  1V

Princeton's Shea Rowing Center is located at 70 Faculty Road, Princeton, N.J.  The sprint racecourse is located at the far end of Lake Carnegie and racing is best viewed towards the finish, roughly three miles north along Nassau Street.
