Dethlefs to Race at U23 World Championships
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rising senior Tom Dethlefs (Lawrenceville, N.J.), Yale's heavyweight crew captain for 2011-12, will represent the U.S. in Amsterdam next week when he competes at the 2011 Under-23 World Rowing Championships. Dethlefs will be rowing in the eight for his second year in a row, making for his fourth international appearance on a U.S. National Team. He will likely be rowing in either six-seat or stroke-seat.
After being named to this year's U23 selection camp, Dethlefs arrived at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., on June 12 to begin training. After one week the camp relocated to Berkeley, Calif., where the squad has been rowing out of the University of California's boathouse. For a little over a month the 27 oarsmen have been working together to match up all the different stroke styles from their respective rowing programs. While Dethlefs was among those to earn a spot in the eight, a four and a quad were also selected. The eight and the four are being coached by Mike Teti and Craig Amerkhanian, the head coaches for Cal and Stanford, respectively.
Dethlefs is one of four rowers returning to the eight after taking a silver medal last year at the 2010 U23 World Rowing Championships in Brest, Belarus. The other three are Mike Gennaro (Syracuse '11), Ty Otto (University of Washington '11) and Rob Munn (University of Washington '12). The junior member of the crew is Austin Hack (Stanford '14), who won a gold medal for the U.S. last year at the 2010 Junior World Rowing Championships.
With Dethlefs being officially selected for the eight, the Yale heavyweights will now have three rowers competing at U23 Worlds. Rising junior Harry Picone and rising sophomore Owen Symington will row in a coxed four for Australia. Their crew is made up of Australian rowers studying at American universities, and recently placed first in the men's four event on July 2 at Philadelphia's Independence Day Regatta.
Racing at the 2011 U23 World Rowing Championships will take place from July 21-24 on the Bosbaan rowing course in Amsterdam. Get more information about the regatta here.
