DERBY, Conn. – The Yale heavyweight crew team had its first outing of the year on Saturday. Competing at the Head of the Housatonic, the Bulldogs threw together some scratch lineups for five eights and two fours, allowing the entire squad to get some valuable racing experience early in the season.
The first race of the day for the heavyweights was the novice eight event where Yale fielded two boats finishing fourth (15:31.99) and sixth (16:16.54).
In the collegiate eight (IRA) event Yale had three boats in the mix, finishing second (13:47.26), fourth (13:51.20) and seventh (14:13.30).
Finally in the collegiate four (IRA) category the heavyweights came first and third, with the top boat finishing in 15:14.43 and the next boat in 15:36.60.

Two weeks from now the Bulldogs will head to Boston to race at the Head of the Charles. The two-day regatta from Oct. 20-21 is the largest regatta in the world with as many as 8,000 athletes expected to compete over the course of the weekend.
