PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The first outing of the season for both the Yale and Brown heavyweight crew teams saw extremely close racing on the Seekonk River on Friday morning. Unfortunately the Bulldogs came away victorious in only one of four races against the Bears, winning the four with coxswain.  Despite quick starts and early leads in each of Yale's other eights races, it was Brown who defended their home course on all three accounts.  The day closed with a fiercely contested varsity eight race where just 1.5 seconds separated Yale from Brown.

The first race of the day was the four with coxswain where the Bulldogs pulled off a win.  Yale was about a length up on Brown's two fours with 500 meters left and went on to finish first with a 3.3 second margin of victory.

In the third varsity eight category, Yale had a lead against both the Brown freshman and third varsity eights off of the start.  The Brown freshmen made a surge early on and had the lead by the halfway mark, leaving the two third varsity boats to battle it out.  The Brown freshmen won the race, followed by the Brown third varsity and then the Yale third varsity.

The second varsity race went mostly the same, with Yale taking a six-seat lead off of the start.  The Brown second varsity pulled even through the 1000 and went on to victory.  The Bears won with a time of 5:38.0, with Yale coming in at 5:43.3.

The varsity eight race was the closest of the day.  Both Brown and Yale had clean starts and it was Yale in front for the first 1000 meters.  Brown closed the margin by the 1500-meter mark and in a fierce sprint to the finish the Bears defended their home course.  Both crews produced some very fast times, with Brown clocking in at 5:25.5 and Yale just 1.5 seconds back in 5:27.0.

The Bulldogs have next weekend off but will be back in action at home on Apr. 13 against Dartmouth for the Olympic Axe.
