  • 7 Bulldogs To Compete in U23 Worlds
    July 11, 2017
    After a perfect season, a national championship and numerous honors, some of the 2017 Yale Heavyweight Crew are set to compete in the U23 World Championships. Four of the Bulldogs, Sholto Carnegie ‘18, Rob Hurn ‘17, Tom Digby ‘20, and Charlie Elwes ‘19, will be representing Great Britain at the competition.

    The Yale eight rowing in the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta had its streak of wins end at three when it fell today to the University of London on the Thames River.

    The Yale eight entered in the Temple Challenge at Henley won its second straight race today by beating King’s College of Australia by two and ¾ lengths.

  • Gladstone, 1V Bulldogs Take IRA Honors

    Steve Gladstone and the Yale Heavyweight Varsity Eight added to their collection of awards for the 2017 racing season. The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) announced the recipients of the regatta’s post-season awards today, and the national champions are making more space on their trophy shelf.
  • Spring Academic All-Ivy Announced

    The Ivy League has announced its spring Academic All-Ivy honorees, and 10 Bulldogs were recognized. Each were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each Ivy League institution nominated five men and five women from its eligible student-athletes.
  • Jacquot Named Crew Captain

    The new captain of the Yale Heavyweight Crew helped the varsity boat win a school-record three straight Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Sprints Championships and a 2017 national championship. Paul Jacquot, who was voted captain of the 2017-18 squad after helping the Elis sweep Harvard on June 10, has been in the No. 5 seat of Yale’s top boat the last three years.

    Two of the fastest boats in the history of collegiate rowing will compete against each other on the Thames River this Saturday morning in the 152nd edition of America’s oldest intercollegiate athletics event, the Yale-Harvard Regatta. The Bulldog heavyweight varsity eight, coming off a national championship less than a week ago, takes on the archrival Crimson in one of the most anticipated Yale-Harvard Regattas in many years.

    The Yale heavyweight crew program continues to make history -- even 165 years into its existence. The latest addition to the Bulldogs’ long list of achievements came in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon on Lake Natoma, as the varsity eight boat edged top-seeded Washington in the Grand Final for the IRA National Championship. This is the school’s first IRA title; the event dates back to 1895 and Yale crew dates back to 1852.

    Racing for the first time since winning the Rowe Cup and the Ivy League Championship at Eastern Sprints 19 days earlier, Yale’s heavyweight crew team earned wins in all three heats Friday morning as competition at the IRA National Championship got underway on Lake Natoma. All three Bulldog boats thus advance straight to Saturday’s semifinals.

However, one piece of hardware is missing from the cases at Gilder Boathouse.

    Steve Gladstone, Yale’s Craig W. Johnson ’68 Head Coach, has been named EARC Coach of the Year after leading his varsity to a third straight Eastern title and his program to a 2017 Rowe Cup for overall supremacy at Worcester.
  • Yale Honors Six Seniors and One Team with Awards at Senior Student-Athlete Reception

    Six seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Emily Barnes (Louisville, Colo.) of the women’s cross country and track & field teams and Jackson Stallings (Moore, Okla.) of the football team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Barnes and Frederick Muth (Los Angeles, Calif.) of the men’s fencing team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Mackenzie Franklin (Austin, Texas) of the women’s swimming & diving team and Denzell Jobson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the men’s track & field team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award. Robin Molen-Grigull (Sydney, Australia) of the heavyweight crew team was the recipient of the Amanda Walton Award.

    The Yale Heavyweight varsity oarsmen are coming off a third straight EARC Sprints Championship and a perfect dual racing season. The victory at Worcester last Sunday gave nine in that boat first-team All-Ivy League status.

    School athletics history was made today on rough water 90 minutes from New Haven, and the Yale men’s heavyweight varsity eight had a unique three-peat today on Lake Quinsigamond. For the first time in the history of the heavyweight rowing program, the Bulldogs have won three straight EARC Sprints Championships.

    The Yale Heavyweight varsity eight has won 10 Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints Championships since the event began in 1946.     Yale’s No. 2 ranked heavyweight crew puts its long dual race win streak on the line this Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie when it faces Princeton and Cornell for the Carnegie Cup. The first varsity boat has won 15 consecutive dual races and is 4-0 this spring.

    The race for the Blackwell Cup was not much of a contest, and the No. 2 ranked heavyweight crew in the nation is perfectly fine with that. The Yale varsity won by three boat lengths today to grab the Cup for an eighth straight year with easy wins over Penn and Columbia on the Housatonic River to improve its record to 4-0.

    The Yale Heavyweight Crew, ranked No. 2 in the country after winning a pair of Ivy League races, has won 14 consecutive dual or triangular races since the start of the 2015 spring racing season. The Bulldogs put that streak on the line when they attempt to keep their string of victories in the Blackwell Cup in tact this Saturday while hosting Columbia and Penn on the Housatonic River.

    The Olympic Axe Trophy has never left the Gilder Boathouse. The Yale Heavyweight Crew can put a new shine on the trophy today after taking the Axe with one of the faster times they will see this year on the Housatonic River. The Bulldogs’ first varsity defeated Dartmouth by a little more than eight seconds to open the home spring racing season.

    The home racing season begins this Saturday morning on the Housatonic River. The 2017 edition of Yale Heavyweight rowing gets unveiled at the Gilder Boathouse as the Bulldogs compete with Dartmouth for the Olympic Axe. The action begins with the first varsity heading down the river at 8:45 AM.

    The Yale heavyweights have won two straight Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Sprints Championships and have moved up the national rankings each season. The Bulldogs, who topped most of the national rankings last spring before finishing second at Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, are poised to continue the progression as they begin a new season this Saturday at Brown.

    Seniors Nate Goodman and John Risberg and freshman Thomas Beck, three Yale Heavyweight oarsmen have been invited to the 2017 U.S. Men’s Under 23 National Team Selection Camp in Oklahoma City, Okla. The date has yet to be determined.
