Varsity Eight Finishes Fifth at Sprints

The Yale heavyweight crew team had its best finish in five years at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday. Yale’s varsity eight locked in a grand final berth with a solid second-place finish in the heat and came back in the afternoon to finish fifth in the grand final. This marks the best finish for the crew since 2008 where the varsity eight finished fourth. Yale’s other crews raced well all around, with the JV leading both the heat and petite final for the first thousand meters, the 3V making a big turnaround from its heat to the petite final and the four finishing third in its straight final. The Bulldogs were in the hunt in each and every race, and will look to build on these solid performances in two weeks at the IRA.

The first outing of the season for both the Yale and Brown heavyweight crew teams saw extremely close racing on the Seekonk River on Friday morning. Unfortunately the Bulldogs came away victorious in only one of four races against the Bears, winning the four with coxswain. Despite quick starts and early leads in each of Yale’s other eights races, it was Brown who defended their home course on all three accounts. The day closed with a fiercely contested varsity eight race where just 1.5 seconds separated Yale from Brown.

Heavyweights Start Season Saturday at Head of the Housatonic

The Yale heavyweight crew team will kick off the 2012-13 racing season this Saturday with a classic, the Head of the Housatonic. This race will be the first step on the road towards the championship regattas of the spring, but this year the team dynamic will be a bit different. At the end of last season the IRA Stewards voted to allow first-year students to race in varsity boats, and as a result, this season the freshman class will not be confined to racing in the freshman eight category. As Steve Gladstone returns for his third year as head coach of Yale heavyweight crew, he now has one big team that is more unified and more competitive than ever.

The Bulldogs are drawn there to spend two months working on experiential learning projects, helping the country’s underprivileged children “learn by doing”. The program, Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI) Africa, was started by a former Yale football player.
