PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Yale Falls to Brown in Season Opener All Three Races Taken by Brown
It was a tough day of losses for Yale in its season opener against Brown. The Bulldogs dropped the varsity, second varsity and freshman races to the Bears on the Seekonk in Providence, R.I.
The Yale varsity of Pieter Morgan (stroke), Andrew Collard (seven), Derek Johnson (six), Lucas Spielfogel (five), Matthew Ramlow (four), Benjamin Grant (three), Duncan Logie (two), Marcos Carzolio (bow) and Rebecca Burgoyne-Allen (coxswain) posted a time of 5:52.9 against Brown's 5:43.0 (a 9.9 second difference). A year ago, the varsity fell to Brown by 1.66 seconds.
The second and third varsity boats both raced and fell to Brown's second varsity. The Brown JV posted at time of 5:46.45 compared to 5:51.86 for the Yale JV and 5:54.11 for the Yale third varsity.
The freshman race saw Brown come in first with a time of 5:42.77. The Yale freshmen finished 9.13 seconds later with a time of 5:51.90. The eight was composed of Robert Macmillan (stroke), Benjamin Bowles (seven), Jonathan Martin (six), Thomas Dethlefs (five), Joseph Alagna (four), Keith Pfirrman (three), Django Broer-Hellermann (two), Patrick O'Malley (bow) and Morgan Welch (coxswain). Brown's second freshman eight finished in third with a time of 6:00.16.
Yale's varsity boat heads to San Diego, Calif. to race in the 36th San Diego Crew Classic on Apr. 4 and 5. The entire team returns to action on Apr. 11 when Dartmouth comes to the Gilder Boathouse in search of the Olympic Axe.
