NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale lightweight crew team will begin its spring season Saturday Apr. 3, with a race against Navy for the Johnson Cup. The race will take place on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. This will mark the seventh year since the inception of the Johnson Cup series between Yale and Navy. Thus far, each team has won three times, with Yale winning the last two races consecutively.
As a team that always seems to put together a good crew, Navy is one of the Bulldogs' consistent foes and the two teams have developed a fierce rivalry. Last year, Navy bested the Elis in the EARC sprints, but the Bulldogs defeated Navy in the IRA Regatta. Both races are considered to be national championship races. Meanwhile at last year's Johnson Cup, Yale won four of the five races. The Bulldogs won the first, second and third varsity races, as well as the first freshman race. The Midshipmen won the second freshman race. In the first varsity race, Yale (6:08.1) narrowly edged out Navy (6:10.3) by just over two seconds.
On Saturday, races will begin at 3 pm, with the varsity race at 4:20 pm.
