Yale, Dartmouth Finish Durand Cup Race in Dead Heat
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - On Saturday, Apr. 24, the Yale lightweight crew team took on Dartmouth for the annual Durand Cup race. The Bulldogs have won the Durand Cup for the past two years, but they were unable to continue their winning streak on Saturday--not yet anyway. The varsity race, which determines the winner of the Durand Cup, ended in a dead heat. The race was too close to call and the video review equipment available at the boathouse proved insufficient to shed further light on the situation. For the time being, the decision has been deferred pending further analysis. Meanwhile, Yale did win all three of the other races on the day.
The dead heat in the varsity race was certainly an anomaly for the Bulldogs. Though trailing for the majority of the race, the Elis managed to put together a big surge to catch up with Dartmouth at the end. Yale's final push put the Varsity Eight boat virtually even with Dartmouth at the finish. Both boats recorded a time of 5:31.6. Though the coaches were able to go to the video review, the VHS quality video proved inconclusive for determining a winner. When offered the solution of a re-row, Dartmouth declined, citing the need to keep it's Varsity Eight fresh for a race against Columbia on Sunday. As a result, the winner of the race is yet to be determined. The coaches will continue to review the tape and eventually decide on a winner or agree to officially call it a dead heat.
"Dead heats are pretty rare," said coach Andy Card. "This is the first time its happened to us. Usually the races go back and forth, and the boats are never completely synchronized. But today, we were locked in step like two dancers."
Aside from the varsity race, Yale was able to bring home wins in the Freshman Eight, the Second Varsity Eight and the Second Freshman Eight. In the Freshman Eight race, Yale won with a time of 5:43.9, narrowly beating out Dartmouth's time of 5:44.9. Dartmouth did not have a Third Varsity Eight, so Yale raced both its Second Varsity boat and Third Varsity boat in the Second Varsity race. The Yale Second Varsity Eight won with a time of 5:42.9. The Yale Third Varsity Eight came in second, with a time of 5:47.3. The Dartmouth Second Varsity Eight finished in 5:48.1. In the Second Freshman Eight, Yale won with a time of 6:03.8. Dartmouth finished in 6:11.7.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will take on Harvard and Princeton for the Goldthwait and Vogel Cups.
