NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In what head coach Andy Card described as a "survival at sea," the Yale lightweight rowing team defeated Penn and Columbia in both the varsity and second varsity events in windy conditions on the Housatonic River.
In the first varsity eights race, which opened the day after a scheduling change, No. 3 Yale defeated No. 9 Columbia by 9 seconds, finishing in a time of 6:21.6. No. 10 Penn was another 7.9 seconds back, with a time of 6:38.5.
Yale also won the second varsity eight handily, finishing in a time of 7:09.7, 14 seconds ahead of Penn. Columbia finished well back with a time of 7:37.1.
Conditions continued to worsen throughout the day, and racing was called off due to swamping midway through the first freshman eights race. Both the third varsity fours and second freshman/fourth varsity fours were called off as well.
