Lightweights Perform at the Head of the Charles

Boston, Mass. -- It was a successful day of racing for the men's lightweight crew team on Sunday, as five boats raced down the course at the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta. The regatta represented the first opportunity for the team to race against league competition. The team faced tough competition across all events, and learned a great deal ahead of the Princeton Chase, to be held on Lake Carnegie next Sunday.

Sunday's events began with a strong performance from freshman Eric Esposito in the men's club single. Esposito-- who had a great deal of success as a sculler during high school-- demonstrated his abilities again, taking fifth place in the event, just over half a second back of the fourth place finisher.

The next event was the men's lightweight four, in which Yale had two entries. The first entry performed well-- narrowly missing first place by two seconds-- to hold their seed and seal a second place finish. Yale's second entry, comprised of three freshmen, also had a great race-- finishing fifth in 17:59. The strong results mean that both crews have qualified for next year's regatta, guaranteeing Yale two entries once again.

In the men's lightweight eight, the Bulldogs used a strong start to establish their rhythm. The crew held their seed in a field of tough league opponents and rowed well down the length of the course. The varsity eight finished third in 15:22. Finally, Yale's second entry in the men's lightweight eight had an impressive race, passing the preceding entry to finish 16th.

Captain Matthew O'Donoghue was happy with the many positives learned from a tough day of racing.

"I was very pleased with the performance of the whole team; from the single in the morning to both eights and the fours in the afternoon, we rowed well as a team," said O'Donoghue. "We will learn from this as we go back to work this week and as we look to make the most of the opportunity to test our speed again this weekend."

The Elis will be back in action next Sunday, October 27th, at the Princeton Chase.
