Bulldogs to Conclude Regular Season with HYPs

Bulldogs to Conclude Regular Season with HYPs

DERBY, Conn. — The Elis close out the regular season this weekend, as they welcome Harvard and Princeton to the Gilder Boathouse. The Bulldogs will be looking to build upon last weekend's victories against Dartmouth as they aim to recapture both the Vogel and Goldthwait Cups. Yale has not won the Goldthwait Cup, awarded to the winning varsity eight, since 2006—a record the Bulldogs will be eager to end this weekend; they will also seek to recapture the Vogel Cup, awarded for the best team performance, after Princeton won it last year.

Yale enters three eights this weekend, and competition promises to be tough across the board.

Senior captain Matthew Cecil spoke of his team's anticipation for a close weekend of racing.

"The HYP always has a highly competitive atmosphere," Cecil said.

"We are looking to execute our race plan, no matter the conditions, with the added element of three boats across."

The Yale third varsity enters the weekend's racing ranked third, one spot behind No. 2 Princeton and two ahead of No. 5 Harvard. With similar margins to both crews thus far this season, all crews will be confident heading into the final race of the regular season. The race is scheduled for a 10:40 a.m. start.

Racing should be tight in the second varsity eight, too, as the Elis face an undefeated Princeton crew and a fast entry from Harvard. After losses to Columbia and Cornell, the Bulldogs bounced back strongly against Dartmouth and head into Saturday confident that they can cause an upset. The second varsity race will begin at 11:00 a.m.

The morning's racing will come to a close with the first varsity eight, starting at 11:20 a.m. With similar results in the spring season so far, Princeton, Harvard and Yale enter the encounter as the third, fourth, and fifth seeds, respectively. As usual, the outcome of the Goldthwait Cup promises to come down to the wire.
