WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Yale lightweight varsity eight finished second at the IRA National Championship Regatta to Columbia Sunday.
Having won their heat, the top-ranked lightweight varsity eight had the opportunity to take the national title for the first time since 2011. The Columbia Lions, however, produced a powerful start that amounted to a length lead at the 1000m post. The Bulldogs challenged the Lions in the closing stages of the race, but were unable to overcome the leaders. Yale finished in second in a time of 5:54.4 behind Columbia (5:52.0). Princeton (5:58.5) took Bronze over the Penn eight (6:00.3). Cornell and Harvard trailed.
Additionally Yale had a coxed and coxless four racing in the regatta. The Bulldog coxed four overcame the Naval Academy in the closing stages of the race to place fourth, just behind Princeton. The four without coxswain won the petite final.
