DERBY, Conn. - On Saturday morning at the Gilder Boathouse, the Yale Lightweight Crew team won the Joy Cup against MIT for the 30th consecutive year. The Bulldogs' first varsity boat edged out MIT's first varsity boat by a comfortable 12.7 seconds to retain the Joy Cup. However, in the same race, the Yale varsity eight lost to Georgetown, who is an invited guest to the Joy Cup. After losing to the Bulldogs in last year's Joy Cup race, the Hoyas beat Yale by a margin of 2.7 seconds on Saturday. Though trailing at the start, Georgetown was able to move past the Bulldogs at the 1000 meter mark and lock in the win.
Despite the loss in the first varsity race, the Bulldogs were able to bring home wins in the second varsity, first freshmen and third varsity races. The second varsity eight defeated Georgetown by a margin of 4.2 seconds, the Eli first freshmen boat won a close race by 1.7 seconds and the second freshmen boat lost by 3.4 seconds.
