No. 3 Bulldogs Win Dodge Cup

April 11, 2009

ORCHARD BEACH LAGOON, N.Y. - After a disappointing finish against Georgetown last weekend, the No. 3 Yale lightweight crew team turned in a strong performance against No. 10 Columbia and No. 8 Penn this Saturday. The Y150 squad won all five races, including a win in the varsity eight race by a wide margin of 5.2 seconds. The Bulldogs also won the second varsity, first freshman, third varsity and second freshman races, each by margins of more than five seconds. This puts the Elis back on the winning track and ready to take on Dartmouth in the Durand Cup next weekend.

The Bulldogs had to battle through tough conditions in Orchard Beach Lagoon, N.Y. in order to secure their win. Driving rain pounded the team throughout the regatta and the Elis had no shelter even when not in the water.

Head coach Andrew Card described the conditions as "nasty" and went on to say that, "The course was challenging for everyone; it was so simple that it was tricky. The team could have performed better but it did okay given the circumstances."

Senior captain Daniel Ensslen summarized the race, "Our program enjoyed some great results at the Dodge Cup, where we managed to win every event. The performance of our program was highlighted by a phenomenal result from our second freshman boat who led from start to finish in their first victory of the season. I am very excited to hit things hard at practice this week and build on our strong momentum against Dartmouth and Cornell this weekend."
