Yale Loses To Rutgers, Dartmouth
April 22, 2006
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Yale men's lightweight crew team lost its first regatta of 2006 Saturday afternoon. In the varsity eight, the final race of the Durand Cup, Yale finished third behind hosts Rutgers and Dartmouth. The loss ends Yale's 11-year streak of wins at the Durand Cup. It is the first time the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers have lifted the cup since 1978.
Things started well enough for the Bulldogs, as the third varsity and freshman boats both rowed to first-place finishes. The 3V boat beat Rutgers by nearly four seconds, while the freshman boat cruised to an 18 second victory over Dartmouth.
However, the Bulldogs struggled to keep pace with the Big Green in the second varsity race. With strong headwinds, Dartmouth won the race by seven and a half seconds over the second place Yale boat.
The final race of the event, the varsity eight, saw the Bulldogs finish third in a closely contested race. Only eight seconds separated the first and third place boats, and Yale missed out on second place by just 2 seconds.
The Bulldogs will host Georgetown Sunday morning for their second race of the weekend.
