DERBY, Conn. - Had it not been for a buoy violation in the second freshman eight boat, the Yale men's lightweight crew team would have gone two days in a row winning the majority of their races but losing the big one. As it was, the Bulldogs won three races against Dartmouth and Rutgers on the Housatonic Sunday afternoon, but lost the Durand Cup race to the Big Green.
Yale's three wins came in the junior varsity eight, the varsity four and the freshman eight races. The Bulldog junior varsity eight boat put in another strong performance to finish nine seconds ahead of second place Dartmouth and fourteen seconds ahead of the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Yale's JV is the only Yale boat still undefeated in 2007 and with today's first place finish the boat has beaten eight schools so far.
The freshman eight comfortably beat Dartmouth but after the race a buoy violation disqualified the Big Green, leaving Rutgers in second place. The varsity four 'A' also had a comfortable outing, finishing ten seconds ahead of second place Dartmouth. The second freshman eight was also disqualified because of a buoy violation, erasing its five second victory over the Dartmouth boat.
In the varsity eight race in which the Durand Cup was up for stake, the Bulldogs narrowly missed out on first. Dartmouth won the race by a margin of just 2.7 seconds with Rutgers a distant third.
Yale now has a fortnight of training ahead before heading to Eastern Sprints on May 13.
