Yale's lightweight varsity eight boat finished fifth in the 2006 Intercollegiate Rowing Association's Grand Final on the Cooper River in New Jersey today. The Bulldogs, in defense of their national title at this race last year, finished the 2,000 meters in 5:46.29.
Cornell (5:42.71) won the race by finishing almost four six seconds faster than the Elis but less than a second faster than Harvard (5:42.79). Princeton (5:45.07) and Columbia (5:45.66) followed in a very tight race.
The varsity eight, which includes Dorothy Halsey (cox), Dave Werner (stroke), Joe Fahrendorf (7), Joe Fallon (6), Alex Rothmeier ((5), Alan Chin (4), Trevor Young (3), Roman Rezanowicz (2f) and Nick Panza (bow), finished third in the morning's second heat with the fifth fastest time overall at 5:56.57.
In other racing on the Cooper River today, the Eli pair of James Higgins and Dan Coleman finished third in the third-level final while the Bulldog open four of Greg Hopkins (4), Pete Reiser (3), Brendan Stallard (2) and Foster Hays (bow) took third in the petite final.
