No. 3 Lightweights Preparing For Dodge Cup
April 10, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 3 men's lightweight crew team is preparing for a big weekend of races against No. 10 Columbia and No. 8 Penn. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will travel to Orchard Beach Lagoon, N.Y., for the annual Dodge Cup race. Though they won the Joy Cup by finishing ahead of MIT last weekend, the first varsity boat's loss to Georgetown left a bad taste in the Elis' mouths, and they will look to return to their winning ways this coming weekend. History is certainly on the Bulldogs' side, given that Yale has only lost the Dodge Cup twice since 1978.
Last year, the Y150 squad handily won the Dodge Cup, sweeping all three races against Columbia and Penn. The varsity eight defeated Columbia's first varsity boat by a margin of 7.3 seconds and Penn's first varsity boat by 9.93 seconds. In the second varsity eight race, the Yale second varsity boat came in first, 1.29 seconds ahead of Yale's third varsity boat. Columbia's second varsity boat finished third, 9.93 seconds off the pace of Yale's second varsity boat. Meanwhile, in the freshman eight race, the Yale first freshman boat beat Columbia by a margin of 6.69 seconds and Penn by a margin of 9.19 seconds. The Yale second freshman boat finished a distant fourth.
The Bulldogs are looking to repeat these results. Moreover, after last weekend's disappointing loss, the theme at practice for the lightweights has been "back to basics." The Elis have been focusing on basic rowing fundamentals and working hard to ensure that they bring home the Dodge Cup this weekend.
Racing begins at 1:00 pm at Orchard Beach Lagoon, N.Y.
