NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 4 Bulldogs are preparing for a big weekend of races against rivals No. 2 Harvard and No. 1 Princeton. Yale is coming off some big wins against No. 5 Cornell and No. 7 Dartmouth last weekend and is poised to continue its winning ways. The Elis will host both the Vogel Cup against Harvard and the Goldthwait Cup against Princeton at the Gilder Boathouse.
Last year, the Bulldogs won the Vogel Cup against Harvard but lost to Princeton for the Goldthwait Cup. Though the Yale second varsity, first freshman and third varsity boats all won their races, the first varsity boat lost to Princeton by a margin of 2.8 seconds. Yale's fierce rivalry with Princeton continued later in the season with the Yale first varsity boat losing to Princeton at the Eastern Sprints but beating the Tigers at the IRAs. The Bulldogs lost to Princeton by a margin of 1.71 seconds at Eastern Sprints, then defeated Princeton by a margin of .7 seconds at the IRAs.
This season, Princeton holds the number one ranking and recently trounced the three-time defending champions, Cornell. Furthermore, the Tigers are undefeated this season and have an 11-race regular season winning streak, going back to last season. No. 2 ranked Harvard is also in the midst of an undefeated season, and the Crimson most recently defeated No. 3 ranked Navy. The Bulldogs also defeated defending champions Cornell last weekend, so this weekend's race figures to be very contested.
