Varsity 8 Looks To Defend IRA Title

June 2, 2006

The Yale Lightweight varsity eight, the defending national champions, will race in Saturday morning's second heat at the 2006 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on the Cooper River in New Jersey. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Andy Card.

The Bulldogs, who have won two of the last four national lightweight titles, are seeded second behind Navy and ahead of Dartmouth, Princeton, Georgetown and St. Joes. Morning heats will be followed by afternoon finals.

The lightweight varsity eight includes Dorothy Halsey (cox), Dave Werner (stroke), Joe Fahrendorf (7), Joe Fallon (6), Alex Rothmeier ((5), Alan Chin (4), Trevor Young (3), Roman Rezanowicz (2f) and Nick Panza (bow).

The Eli pair, comprised of James Higgins (2) and Dan Coleman (bow), took fourth in its opening heat today with a 7:20.63, while California won that race with a 6:51.20, the fastest time of the day. That puts the Yale pair in the third-level final on Saturday.

In other racing involving Bulldog boats, the open four of Greg Hopkins (4), Pete Reiser (3), Brendan Stallard (2) and Foster Hays (bow) finished second in a Thursday heat and then took third today to make Saturday's petite final on the Cooper River.
