Bulldogs Prepare for NYU Invitational
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men’s fencing team will
compete in the NYU Invitational tournament this Saturday, Jan. 23
in New York, N.Y. The meet will be the Bulldogs’ first major
multi-team competition since returning from winter break, and it
will be the Bulldogs’ last such event before Ivy League
competition. Yale will fence against Notre Dame, Stevens, Wayne
State, NYU and Ohio State.
At last year’s NYU Invitational, Yale put up a 2-3 record,
defeating Stevens Tech (15-12) and Wayne State (16-11), while
losing to then-defending NCAA champions Ohio State (4-23) and
then-runners up for the NCAA championship, Notre Dame (8-19). The
Bulldogs also lost a heartbreaker to hosts NYU, by a final score of
14-13. As usual, last year’s team benefited from the
spectacular fencing of the foil squad, the two-year defending
champions for the Little Iron Man Trophy.
This year, the Elis are poised to enjoy similarly strong
performances from the foil squad, which has returned most of its
members from last year. The team will also benefit from the
much-improved saber squad, which performed very well earlier this
week against Vassar.
“Coming off of our victory against Vassar, we have had a
solid week of practice and are looking to make the most of this
weekend,” said captain Andrew Holbrook. “Notre Dame and
Ohio State are two of the strongest teams we will face, but we are
looking for some upsets this weekend and to improve on last
year’s performance at this tournament.”
The team will leave for New York on Friday evening and return to
New Haven on Saturday night. The competition kicks off at 8 a.m.
this Saturday at NYU.
