Nathaniel Benzimra to Fence at Junior Olympics
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On Friday, Feb 12, freshman Nathaniel
Benzimra will take part in the fencing Junior Olympics. Benzimra
will be fencing in saber in the Junior category. The tournament
will take place in Memphis and will last throughout the weekend.
Benzimra, along with coach Henry Harutunian, will leave New Haven
on Thursday.
The Junior Olympics are the are the national championships for
junior and cadet fencers, and are the precursors for the Junior and
Cadet World Fencing Championships. Fencers must qualify in order to
be able to compete in the Junior Olympics. Benzimra will be the
only Yale fencer to compete this weekend. He finished the 2009
season ranked 61st in the country for saber, and Friday will mark
the first time since the end of that season that he will be
competing nationally.
“The team wishes him luck and a safe trip,” said
captain Andrew Holbrook. “We all have confidence in him and
know how hard he has been working to prepare for this and Ivies.
It’s a great opportunity for him to get in some high level
experience before Ivies next weekend.”
