WALTHAM, Mass. – The Yale men's fencing team competed in the Brandeis Invitational tournament on Sunday, and finished the day with an overall record of 4-1. Yale beat Boston College, Brandeis, Haverford and MIT, while losing only to St. Johns.

At last year's tournament, the Elis were able to defeat all five opponents to earn a sweep on the day. This year however, St. Johns fielded a much stronger team than in years past. Regardless, the Bulldogs put up a tough fight, eventually losing by a score of 16-11.

The young Yale epee squad was particularly impressive on the day. Peter Cohen compiled an overall record of 8-2, and freshman Cornelius Saunders enjoyed a great victory over NCAA Champion, Marat Israelian of St. Johns.

"Cornelius, Peter and Ben performed very well today," said Cohen. "I'm pleased that our focused training and hard work in Payne Whitney translated into top-notch fencing under the pressure of competition."

Meanwhile, the foilists once again proved their standing as one of the best foil squads in the country. Senior Nathaniel Botwinick finished with an overall record of 12-3 and captain Jonathan Holbrook finished with a record of 11-2. Holbrook also finished with a perfect 3-0 record against St. Johns.

The saberists also had an overall good day, finishing a perfect 9-0 against MIT. Squad captain Adam Fields finished the day with an overall record of 9-2.

"I think that the saber squad performed very well today," said Fields. "Our high point was definitely our 9-0 sweep at MIT. We had some close bouts against St. Johns that we can learn a lot from. Back at Yale, we will continue to practice hard in order to come out strong in January."
