NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Yale men's fencing team will once again participate in the NYU Invitational tournament. This will be the Bulldogs' second team competition of the season and their first meet since returning from winter break. The tournament is hosted by NYU and will feature Notre Dame, Ohio State, St Johns, Stevens Tech, and Wayne State.
"The team had an intense winter training session before classes began and is eager to head back into competition," said captain Jon Holbrook. "Since our meet with Vassar was postponed, we are looking forward to the NYU Invitational as an important bellwether for our season."
At last year's NYU invitational, the Elis finished with a 3-2 record. Yale defeated NYU (20-7), Stevens Tech (19-8) and Wayne State (17-10). The Bulldogs fell to Notre Dame (10-17), a team that was then ranked number 1 in the country. Yale also lost a closely contested meet against Ohio State, with a final score of 11-16. Overall, last year's record represented a one win improvement over the previous year.
This year, Yale will look continue improving but the Bulldogs will have plenty of tough opponents between them and their goal.
"Our strongest opponents this weekend will be OSU and ND, perennial contenders for the NCAA team Championship," said Holbrook. "Given our well-balanced team, with no gaps in any of the weapons, we look forward to seeing what we can do against these two schools."
Competition begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
