Two Wins, One Loss at Vassar
Despite Wins, Elis Drop Heartbreaker to Sacred Heart
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Victories against Drew and Vassar highlighted the weekend for the Yale men's fencing team, which travelled to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to compete in a meet on Feb. 2.
The success the Bulldogs found against Drew and Vassar, which they beat 22-5 and 17-10, respectively, could not be quite be replicated against Sacred Heart: the Elis dropped a 13-14 heartbreaker against the Pioneers, posting the same verdict as in a Jan. 19 match-up at home in Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
"Unfortunately, we lost to Sacred Heart again. It is disappointing as we are a more talented team," said junior captain Cornelius Saunders. "The remaining matches went well; the underclassmen demonstrated that our squad has considerable depth."
Notable performances by Yale fencers on Saturday included a 5-0 effort by junior Peter Cohen, and a 3-0 record against Sacred Heart posted by senior Nathaniel Benzimra.
Next weekend, the Elies head to Cambridge, Mass., for the Feb. 9-10 Ivy League Championship.
