Fencers Hope to Rebound

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Ten members of the Yale men's fencing team will travel to Queens, N.Y., to compete in the Mar. 10 NCAA Northeast Regional, seeking a berth in the Mar. 21-24 NCAA National Championship.

Hosted by St. John's at the Carnesecca Arena and Taffner Field House, the event will offer the Bulldogs a chance to rebound after a difficult Ivy League Championships last weekend in Cambridge, Mass.

Representing Yale in epee competition will be junior captain Cornelius Saunders, as well as fellow juniors Peter Cohen and Benjamin Mappin-Kasirer and. In foil, sophomore Sam Broughton will be joined by a trio of freshmen: Jin Ishizuka, Dillon Lew and Brian Wang. Seniors Nate Benzimra and William Zhao and junior Hugh O'Cinneide, all saber, round out the Yale contingent competing at the NCAA Northeast Regional

The Yale fencers were selected to compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional on the basis of their performance throughout the past season and at last weekend's Ivy League Championship. Although the Bulldogs finished in fifth at the Ivy League Championship, Benzimra, Broughton, Cohen, O'Cinneide and Saunders all earned a twelfth-place finish in their respective weapons.

The top performers at the NCAA Northeast Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championship, slated to take place this year in San Antonio, Texas.

ESPN3 will be streaming the NCAA Northeast Regional live starting 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
