Cohen, O’Cinneide Qualify for NCAA Championship
INDIANAPOLIS — Two members of the Yale men's fencing team have qualified for the Mar. 21-24 NCAA National Championship: junior Peter Cohen and sophomore Hugh O'Cinneide, who will compete in epee and saber, respectively.
The NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee announced the field of 144 fencers here in Indianapolis on Tuesday. Two members of the Yale women's fencing team will also compete at the NCAA National Championships, which will be co-hosted this year by The University of the Incarnate Word and San Antonio Sports at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas.
Qualification was based on performance throughout the season and the results of the NCAA Northeast Regional, which the Elis competed in on Mar. 10 at St. John's Carnesecca Arena and Taffner Field House in Queens, N.Y.
At the NCAA Northeast Regional, Cohen finished fifth in epee competition to qualify for the NCAA National Championship in fifth place. O'Cinneide fought strongly to finish in seventh place, a result that vaulted him into the NCAA National Championship in seventh place.
