Four Elis Qualify For NCAA Championship

Four Elis Qualify For NCAA Championship

March 9, 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - At the completion of the NCAA Regional Championship at MIT, in Cambridge, Mass., four fencers from the Yale men's fencing team had performed well enough to advance to the NCAA National Championship. In epee, the two qualifiers were captain Michael Pearce, who finished fourth overall, and freshman Alexander Cohen, who finished eighth overall. The team also qualified two foilists. Junior John Gurrieri took fifth place and freshman Shiv Kachru grabbed ninth place.

A maximum of two fencers, per weapon class, are allowed to qualify for nationals from each school, meaning that the Bulldogs did as well as possible in foil and epee. Exceptionally, this was the most fencers that the Bulldogs have qualified for the NCAA National Championship in at least five years.

Sophomore Nathaniel Botwinick and senior Sebastian Cano-Besquet both just missed the cut, coming in 13th and 14th place respectively.

The NCAA National Championship will take place on the weekend of Mar. 21-22 in University Park, Pa.
