Junior Varsity Shuts Out Milford Academy, 8-0
Duron and Stibb Combine for 40-Yard Touchdown
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman tailback Taylor Stibb turned a short screen pass from freshman quarterback Dez Duron into a 40-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and that was all the scoring the Yale junior varsity's defense needed on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Clint Frank Field against Milford Academy. Sophomore outside linebacker Matt Battaglia forced a safety in the fourth quarter to finish off the 8-0 shutout.
The downpour, which started well before the game, dictated that ball security and solid tackling would be key. Stibb had several nice runs on the day, including a 13-yarder early in the first where he carried a number of defenders along for the ride. His big scoring play came at 13:40 of the second when a Milford defender slipped in the mud, enabling Stibb to take off for the score.
After that the Yale defense kept Milford from mounting much of a threat. Sophomore linebacker Austin Pulsipher delivered a loud sack to help end the next Milford drive at the Yale 41. The Falcons got to the Yale eight on the next drive, but a run up the middle from there was stuffed and junior linebacker Dan Walsh came away with the loose ball.
Freshman defensive lineman Charles Holmes had a pair of fumble recoveries in the second half to help seal the win. The second came after a bone-jarring tackle by freshman defensive back Kurt Stottlemyer forced the ball loose.
Battaglia, who also had a sack when Milford went for it on fourth-and-four at the Yale 35 in the third quarter, put the game out of reach by pressuring the Falcons' quarterback into intentional grounding in the end zone with 3:21 to play. Freshman Philippe Panico had pinned Milford at its own seven with a punt to start that drive.
Stottlemyer broke up a pass deep in Yale territory on fourth down with just over a minute to play, enabling the offense to come out for sophomore quarterback Bryan Farris to take a knee and run out the clock.
The junior varsity team plays at Brown next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
