Preseason Ivy Poll Announced
PRINCETON, N.J. – It's no surprise that the media prediction for the 2011 Ivy League football season is almost the exact order of finish from the 2010 standings. Yale, which received one first-place vote, is third behind Penn (12) and Harvard (2) in the 2011 Ivy League Football Preseason Media Poll that was released today.
The Bulldogs, picked fourth last fall by the Ancient Eight media, are coming off a 7-3 campaign and a second-place tie with the Crimson (5-2).
Brown (6-4, 5-2) rounded out the top half of the poll in fourth with the remaining two first-place votes, followed by Dartmouth (6-4, 3-4) and Columbia (4-6, 2-5). Cornell (2-8, 1-6) and Princeton (1-9, 0-7) were tied for seventh.
Tom Williams, the Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of Football, begins his third season at Yale with 40 returning lettermen and 22 players who have started games. Five Bulldogs with All-Ivy honors return to the 2011 squad.
Yale players are due back in New Haven on Aug. 18 to begin preparation for the 2011 season. The pre-season scrimmage is set for Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. against Dean College in the Bowl. The Elis kick off the regular season on the Class of '54 Field Sept. 17 against Georgetown.
There was other news coming out of the league office today. The Ivy League, which for 55 years had one player of the year recipient, also announced that offensive and defensive winners of the Asa A. Bushnell Cup will now be selected beginning this fall. The 2011 Ivy players of the year are presented Dec. 5 at a special reception and press conference in the Hilton Room of New York City's famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel as part of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Awards festivities.
