Great Way To Start Prep For New Season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was raining hard two hours before the first Yale football practice of the new coaching regime. By the time the first player's cleats hit the green grass at Clint Frank Field, the sun was shining bright, bringing perfect conditions to kickoff spring practice.
The Yale football team is looking for the same rapid transformation. Today was the first of a dozen spring practice dates for a young and relatively inexperienced Bulldog squad.
If you were among the many watching from the sidelines on this glorious spring day, you noticed certain things about the 2012 Elis. There was plenty of enthusiasm, hustle, teamwork and encouragement as the sophomores, juniors and seniors of the fall ran around in their gray shorts, practice jerseys and helmets.
The coaches, using their baseball caps to fend off the sun that glistened off the bright white helmets, saw lots of good things and enough areas that need work over the next few weeks.
"Our goal since January 12 has been to build the foundation. If we can do that over the next 12 practices, we will be in much better shape in the fall," said Tony Reno, the Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of Yale Football, who was most interested in seeing some of his players throw and catch footballs for the first time.
More than two hours later, he and his new staff had seen plenty of that and more.
The players got in plenty of running, but the fastest lap of the day may have been the one that got the Bulldogs to dinner a few minutes sooner as they took off for the Smilow Center to hit the showers. Hungry football players will do that.
The second practice is tomorrow at 6:00.
